Collectors Guide 01: How to Display Art at Home

You’ve started collecting art, gathering sentimental pieces to your collection over the years. But, how do you best display the artwork in your home? How do you decide where and how to hang each piece? Look no further, as ArtThou gives you the best tips, tricks, and inspiration.

Step 1: How to curate the art in your home?

  • Check the mood

    • Do you want to create a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom? Consider more minimalist artworks.

    • Opt for a variety of artworks in the lounge, in the form of a gallery wall.

    • Save more colourful art for the kitchen.

  • Think about a theme

    • Artworks can act in conversation with each other; pair figurative works together, or clash abstract patterned works.

  • Pick your frames

    • Looking to bring together distinct artworks? Use the same colour frame to draw the pieces together.

    • Mounts around artworks can really change the shape of the piece, often creating clever emphasis for smaller artworks.

  • Consider the colour

    • A seamless way to create balance is by adopting artworks with a similar colour palette.

  • Location, location, location

    • Entranceways make a big impression, and stairways often make room for thoughtful pieces.

Step 2: Practical Tips on Hanging Art

Hang from the centre

  • The centre of a framed piece of artwork should be 145 cm above the ground— the average eye level, and the height galleries and museums typically hang their pieces.

  • Hang above furniture

    • When placing art over a sofa or headboard, for instance, it should span roughly 2/3 of the width of the furniture piece. Hang art so that the bottom of the frame is 20-25 cm above the furniture piece.

  • Hang multiple artworks together

    • When hanging groups of artworks, consider the selection as one unit. Keep the 145 cm focal point for balance. Space multiple artworks with a 8-15 cm gap.

Step 3: Alternative ways to display art at home

  • Lean the artwork instead of hanging it

    • A fuss-free alternative to hanging artworks

    • This works great for larger framed works and canvases

  • Use a floating shelf

    • Shelves are a fun and malleable way to display art

    • Place artworks on floating shelves to complement other ornaments or books

  • Use a plate stand

    • A novel way to showcase artworks and decorate tables or sideboards

    • This works well for artworks on thicker material
